Russian importers to have to revise supply chains in case of Belarus’ restrictions on German goods transit – expert

Russian importers will have to change their supply chains in case of restrictions on transit of German goods through Belarus, Ksenia Bannikova, Non-Resource Sector Economics chief at the Strategic Studies Center, told RIA Novosti.<br> <br> As previously reported, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko held on July 6 a meeting on countering Western sanctions. He did not rule out a possibility of restricting transit through the country in case the West imposed new sanctions, and instructed the government to look at foreign companies that operate in Belarus and transit of goods through the country. He believes that restrictions are advisable in relation to German companies. He reminded that the Belarusian government banned imports of Škoda Auto (Czech Republic), Liqui Moly and Beiersdorf (Germany) goods in April 2021 for six months.<br> <br> In case the ban on transit of German goods through Belarus, it will primarily affect imports of goods to Russia, said Bannikova.<br> <br> According to customs statistics, a total of over 8 million tonnes of goods per year are delivered to the Russian Federation through Belarus (around 2 million tonnes in January-May 2021). Goods originating from Germany account for 25-26%; Poland – 11%; Italy – 9-10%; France – 6-7%.<br> <br> More than a half of Russia’s imports from Germany (mostly plastics, equipment, vehicles, beverages, paper and cardboard) goes through Belarus. Imports of products originating from Germany to Russia through Belarus made up 60% of total imports of such products in physical terms in 2019, 65% in 2020, and 66% in January-May 2021, Bannikova said.
