Russia-Belarus political integration possible in theory, but not now — Kremlin spokesman

Political integration of Russia and Belarus is possible theoretically but not now, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with Belarus’ ONT television channel on Sunday. </p> <p> </p> <p> When asked to comment on an opinion that after agreeing 28 union programs, Moscow and Minsk left a political card “in cold storage” to “be played later,” the Kremlin spokesman said, “There is nothing in cold storage now.” </p> <p> </p> <p> He recalled that the two countries’ presidents, Vladimir Putin of Russia and Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus, had spoken “quite in detail about the myth of further political integration” after their talks in Moscow on September 9. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Political integration is out of the question at the moment. It is possible theoretically, if it is in the interests of the two countries,” he said, adding that “no one is planning” political integration today because the countries are now yet ready for this level of integration. “So, there is nothing in cold storage,” he repeated. </p> <p> </p> <p> The union programs that were agreed by Russia and Belarus will be beneficial for both countries, it is a win-win situation for both, Peskov said. </p> <p> </p> <p> “In the long run, it will be beneficial for both countries. It is a win-win situation. In other words, it will do good to both. Hence, critics, who are saying that someone is seeking to take over the other one, who is in a subordinate position, are absolutely wrong,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Presidents of Belarus and Russia Alexander Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin, at a meeting in Moscow on 9 September 2021, reconciled all 28 union programmes to deepen integration between the two countries. On 10 Sep 2021 the Council of Ministers of the Union State approved the 2021-2023 guidelines for the implementation of the provisions of the Treaty on the Creation of the Union State and 28 Union State programmes aimed to accomplish major aspects of strengthening Russia-Belarus integration. The union programmes are to be approved at the meeting of the Supreme State Council of the Union State on 4 November 2021, Lukashenko informed on 10 September. End </p>
