National Bank expects Belarus’ inflation growth to accelerate to 9% yoy in Q2 2021

The National Bank of Belarus expects year-on-year inflation to accelerate to 9% in the second quarter of 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> Deputy Head of Economic Analysis at the National Bank Piotr Milevsky made a statement to this effect during a media breakfast organized by the IPM Research Centre on April 19. </p> <p> </p> <p> Milevsky said that the National Bank regularly polls about 1.4 thousand companies to monitor the economic situation. The latest survey showed that the vast majority of companies expect their selling prices to increase, while a third note that the rate of price growth will accelerate. </p> <p> </p> <p> “In analysing this, we believe that the consumer price index will also change. In the next three months (April-June – editor’s note) the price increase could be 1.2%,” Milevsky said. </p> <p> </p> <p> In June 2021, the National Bank expects year-on-year inflation to increase to 9%. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the estimates of the National Bank, in the second half of 2021, the growth rate of consumer prices will slow down, and inflation is expected to be within 7% by the end of the year. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the NBB reported a slowdown in annual inflation in Belarus to 8.5% in Mar 2021. Consumer prices rose in Mar 2021 by 8.5% year on year (8.7% yoy in Feb 2021; 7.7% y/y in Jan 2021). Core inflation increased to 8.2% in Mar 2020; 8.3% yoy in Feb 2021; 7.5% y/y in Jan 2021. End </p>

According to the estimates of the National Bank, in the second half of 2021, the growth rate of consumer prices will slow down, and inflation is expected to be within 7% by the end of the year.
