Makey confirms Belarus’ commitment to sustaining WTO accession efforts
<p> MINSK, Apr 20 - PrimePress. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makey has confirmed Belarus’ strong determination to continue the work on completing the negotiations on the accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). The press-service of Belarus’ Foreign Ministry posted a statement to this effect following Makey’s meeting with WTO Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in Switzerland on 20 April. </p> <p> </p> <p> Makey informed the WTO director general about the work carried out by the government of Belarus in this direction and the current state of the negotiation process with the key member countries of the World Trade Organization. It was noted at the meeting that Belarus is the largest economy among the states that are at an advanced stage of negotiations, and its early accession is in the interests of both the country and all WTO members. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the report, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala supported Belarus’ intention to join the WTO and confirmed the WTO Secretariat’s readiness to continue providing the necessary assistance for that. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The parties exchanged views on advancing the dialogue on the WTO reforms and preparations for the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference slated in November-December 2021. Makey said Belarus was interested in participating in the event as an observer in the negotiations on new international rules in electronic commerce, simplification of investment procedures, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises. These areas are consonant with the priorities of the Belarusian government,” the press service added. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the government of Belarus plans to bring the national legislation in line with the commitments to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and accede to the WTO before 2026, according to the government action plan for the period to 2025 approved by Council of Ministers’ resolution No.758 of December 24, 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Belarus applied for the accession to the WTO in 1993, and has accelerated the required internal procedures in recent years. Belarus expected to complete the accession talks at the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference held on June 8-11, 2020 in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan), which was cancelled due to the pandemic. End </p>
