Lukashenko instructs to establish agribusiness holdings
<p> MINSK, May 18 - PrimePress. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko instructed to establish regional agribusiness holdings as it was done in the Vitebsk Oblast. He spoke about this on May 15, 2020 during his trip to the Vitebsk Oblast, the presidential press office reports. </p> <p> </p> <p> Government resolution No.314 of May 21, 2019 approves measures to implement presidential directive No.6 on countryside and agricultural sector development of March 4, 2019. It provides for the establishment of large holdings with the participation of farm product processing companies. At a meeting on the creation of a super-large agro-industrial holding in the Vitebsk Oblast held in November 2019, Lukashenko said that four out of five farm holdings showed poor performance. The aggregate debt of the agricultural sector of the Vitebsk Oblast reached Br3 billion ($1.23 billion at the rate of the National Bank of Belarus) as of January 2020 that The Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee said in March 2020 that Br2.823 billion ($1.15 billion) would be allocated for the local agroindustry in 2020-2025. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The Vitebsk Oblast has nowhere to retreat. People should come to you and learn how to set up such integrated institutions and pull out loss-making enterprises from the pit,” Lukashenko said on May 15, “Such holdings can be established in the Mogilev and Minsk Oblasts. Loss-making farms should be attached to meat or milk processing enterprises as sources of raw materials. At least one holding should be set up in each oblast. They will be needed everywhere, even in the Grodno Oblast and some districts. We can revitalize the Vitebsk Oblast in five years.” </p> <p> </p> <p> The Vitebsk Oblast numbers seven integrated entities, in which low-margin farms are attached to meat and milk processing enterprises. </p> <p> </p> <p> Lukashenko visited agricultural organizations that are part of Milk OJSC (Vitebsk). “This is what the entire Vitebsk Oblast should be like, but the quality, technology, effective output and efficiency should be even higher than here,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> As reported, net losses of Milk OJSC increased in 2019 by 70% year on year to Br23.368 million ($9.6 million). The company’s sales revenue shrank in 2019 by 6.5% yoy to Br159.23 million ($65.1 million). The company shares are held by 2,863 shareholders; 99.118 % belong to the state. It employs 1,031 people.
