January rise in prices of medicines in Belarus result in 1.6 p.p. growth of state-regulated prices

The rise in prices of medicines in Belarus in January 2021 contributed 1.6 percentage points to an increase in consumer prices of socially important goods by 5.9% in annual terms, the Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade (MART) of Belarus says in its comment on inflation. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, annual inflation in Belarus rose to 7.7% in January 2021 from 7.4% in December 2020. In January alone, inflation was at 1.1%. </p> <p> </p> <p> The price increase largely followed the abolition of the lowered rate of value added tax (VAT) on some commodities, including socially important goods. A 4.6% increase in prices of medicines (which led to a 1.6 p.p. annual increase in the annual increase in prices of socially important goods), margarine and canned fish contributed to the annual consumer price increase the most together with a rise in prices of imported goods and domestic producer prices (due higher prices of raw materials), which resulted in higher prices of eggs, dairy, meat and meat products, reads the report. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to MART, the contribution of fruits and vegetables in the increase in prices of socially important goods decreased from 1.2 p.p. in December 2020 to 0.5 p.p. in January 2021. A significant impact on the price increase was produced by a 1.8% increase in prices of imported fish and fish products (0.05 p.p.); oils and fats – 2% on average (0.1 p.p.). In January, prices of long-keeping vegetables rose by an average of 8.3% (0.19 p.p.). </p> <p> </p> <p> MART says that permanently regulated prices and tariffs increased by 0.6% on an annual basis, up 7.3% over the past 12 months. In January 2021, the price of motor fuel rose by 1.1% month on month; liquefied gas in cylinders – by 1.3%; tobacco products – by 5.4%; vodka – by 2% due to higher excise rates (since January 1, 2021).
