First power unit of Belarus’ NPP to be put into commercial operation in April-May 2021 – Rosatom

The first power unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (Astravyets District, Grodno Oblast) will be put into commercial operation in April-May 2021, Andrei Petrov, Director General of Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company, First Vice President for nuclear power plant construction of the ASE Group told Russian RIA Novosti. </p> <p> </p> <p> “All tests of the power unit during its pilot operation are going according to plan. We are preliminary planning to put the unit into commercial operation in late April or May this year,” Petrov said. </p> <p> </p> <p> The first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant started operation and was connected to the national grid of Belarus on November 3, 2020. Its pilot operation–the final and longest (several months) check before putting into commercial operation–began in late December 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, according to the program for comprehensive modernization of the energy sector for 2021-2025, the Belarusian NPP will produce 8.601 billion kWh in 2021; 15.485 billion kWh in 2022; 18.543 billion kWh in 2023-2025 per year. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. The first power unit of the NPP is expected to be put into commercial operation in 2021, the second power unit – in 2022. End </p>
