Ex-head of Belgazprombank Viktor Babariko to run for president
<p> MINSK, May 12 - PrimePress. Former Chairman of the Board of Belgazprombank OJSC Viktor Babariko is going to nominate himself for president of Belarus. He wrote about this on Facebook on May 12, 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> “I will stand for election on August 9 [the date of the presidential election]. I’m not naïve, and I perfectly understand the boundaries and rules of the game in Belarus, and, most importantly, the final part of this play, which was described back in the Stalin era: it doesn’t matter how they vote, it does matter how they count. However, knowing all this, I believe in the limitations of any ineffective system, in the opportunities that new tools provide based on modern technologies, and I am very afraid that this is the last chance of at least some elections in independent Belarus. I considered it unacceptable and embarrassing for myself to regret that I didn’t try to make a change, justifying myself by saying that nothing can be changed,” Babariko wrote. </p> <p> </p> <p> Victor Babariko was born on November 9, 1963 in Minsk; graduated from the Belarusian State University in 1988 and the Academy of Management under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus in 1995; engaged in the banking business since July 1995; chairman of the Board of Belgazprombank OJSC since July 2000. Belgazprombank’s press office informed on May 12 that Babariko stepped down as chairman of the Board and dismissed him from the post of chairman of the board of his own free will. </p> <p> </p> <p> Valery Tsepkalo, the creator and former head of the Belarusian High-Tech Park, announced his presidential ambition on May 8. Tsepkalo is a professional diplomat; served as first deputy minister of foreign affairs of Belarus, ambassador of Belarus to the United States, assistant to the President of Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> As reported, the first presidential election in Belarus was held on June 23 (first round) and July 10, 1994 (second round). A referendum on amendments to Article 81 of the Constitution of Belarus was held on October 17, 2004. The amendments abolished the restriction on the number of presidential terms in office for one person (previously no more than two five-year terms). Alexander Lukashenko has been staying in office since then. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belgazprombank OJSC was established in 1990 as an authorized bank of Gazprom Group in Belarus. Russian Gazprom PJSC and Gazprombank JSC own 49.66% stake in Belgazprombank; Gazprom Transgaz Belarus – 0.49%; the Republic of Belarus represented by the Ministry of Energy of Belarus – 0.18%.
