MINSK, Nov 17 - PrimePress. The European Union (EU) will embark on negotiations with Belarus in order to liquidate the migration crisis on the Belarus-EU border. An agreement to this effect was reached in the course of the telephone conversation held on 17 November by Germany’s acting Chancellor Angela Merkel and president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarusian president’s press-service said.
Merkel and Lukashenko “came to a certain understanding as to how the parties should act further in solving the existing issues,” Lukashenko’s press-service said.
“The Belarusian president and Germany’s acting chancellor agreed that the problem will be addressed at the level of Belarus and the EU, and that the two sides will designate officials who will immediately enter into negotiations in order to resolve the existing problems. In July 2021, President Lukashenko stated that, due to sanctions imposed by Western countries, he no longer intended to restrain illegal migration to the European Union. This was followed by attempts to illegally cross the border with Lithuania, Poland and Latvia by migrants from the Middle East, with total inactivity of the Belarusian border service. On 15 November at a session of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), foreign ministers of member states of the European Union (EU) reached a political agreement on applying the 5th parcel of sanctions against Belarus.
Merkel discussed the migration issue on 10 and 11 November by phone with Putin, who said, among other things, that de-escalation of the migration crisis is only possible through direct talks between the EU and the Belarusian authorities.
