The EU sectoral sanctions against Belarus may be approved at a summit of the EU Council on 24-25 June 2021, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell before the meeting of the Council of EU Foreign Ministers in Luxembourg on 21 June. </p> <p> </p> <p> These economic sanctions, “which will affect certain sectors of [Belarus’] economy, will be approved after a discussion at the European Council” on 24-25 June 2021. "The European Council, as you know, does not make final decisions, but it makes a political decision,” Prime reports citing Borrell as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Making a decision on economic sanctions (against Belarus – editor’s note) is a serious step. Usually, we limit ourselves to individual restrictive measures. And it is understandable, since economic measures affect the population, and we are trying not to harm those who are not to blame for anything. But at a certain point, harsher measures have to be taken, which, unfortunately, will also affect ordinary people. But the Belarusian authorities do not change their behaviour, there are more than 500 political prisoners. We have witnessed terrible plays: kidnapping of journalists, alleged confessions in front of TV cameras. Therefore, we have to use all available measures. Sanctions are part of these measures,” Borrell said. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the EU leaders at the May 24 summit adopted a political decision to adopt new sanctions against Belarus after a Ryanair forced landing incident in Minsk. The European Council, among other things, is considering the possibility of extending sanctions to Belarusian exports; in particular, supplies of potash fertilizers, oil products and timber to the European market may be banned.
