EU envoys pass fifth package of sanctions against Belarus

Permanent representatives of 27 EU countries have passed the fifth package of sanctions against Belarusian authorities, a source in the delegation of one of the European Union’s countries in the EU Council told TASS on Wednesday. </p> <p> </p> <p> “EU envoys greenlighted the fifth package of sanctions that includes around 25 individuals and legal entities, at a meeting this morning,” he said, adding that the decision is expected to be published in the Official Journal of the EU and come into force on 2 December. </p> <p> </p> <p> The new list may include individuals and organisations that Brussels considers to be involved in the migration crisis at the Belarusian borders. </p> <p> </p> <p> Bloomberg reported on 1 December that Belarusian national carrier Belavia and Syria’s Cham Wings Airlines are among entities the European Union is planning to sanction over a migrant crisis that the bloc blames on Minsk. EU member states are expected to approve sanctions on 17 individuals and 11 entities this week, according to two people familiar with the measures, who asked not to be identified because the decision isn’t yet public. Nitrogen fertilizer producer Grodno Azot and oil producer Belarusneft, as well as Belarusian border officials and judges, are also on the list, one of the people said. </p> <p> </p> <p> In July 2021, President Lukashenko stated that, due to sanctions imposed by Western countries, he no longer intended to restrain illegal migration to the European Union. This was followed by attempts to illegally cross the border with Lithuania, Poland and Latvia by migrants from the Middle East, with total inactivity of the Belarusian border service. By 1 November, the Polish border guards alone registered 23 thousand such attempts. On 15 November at a session of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), foreign ministers of member states of the European Union (EU) reached a political agreement on applying the 5th parcel of sanctions against Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics informed that the fifth package of sanctions would target Belarusian officials, companies, including aviation companies, which are involved in migrant trafficking to Belarus. In his words, the sixth package of sanctions, which can be triggered in case of further escalation of the migration crisis, was also discussed. End </p>
