EU conducting technical negotiations with Belarus on migrant repatriation
<p> MINSK, Nov 22 - PrimePress. The European External Action Service (EEAS) is conducting technical negotiations with Belarus’ relevant agencies regarding migrant repatriation, EEAS official Peter Stano told a briefing in Brussels on 22 November. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The High Representative of the [EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell] has already held talks with the Belarusian Foreign Minister [Vladimir Makey] twice in recent days, and consultations are underway at other levels,” Stano said. “Their sole purpose is to facilitate the safe repatriation of people stranded in this country,” TASS reports citing Stano as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> Lukashenko said on 22 November that the contact persons on behalf of the European Union who were supposed to cooperate with Belarus on resolving the refugee crisis would not get in touch. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the Belarusian president’s press-service, an agreement was reached in the course of the telephone conversation held on 17 November by Germany’s acting Chancellor Angela Merkel and president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko that the European Union will embark on negotiations with Belarus in order to liquidate the migration crisis on the Belarus-EU border. Merkel also communicated to the Belarusian president the request of President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen to involve in the process the international organizations dealing with the problems of refugees and migrants, which are already actively cooperating with the Belarusian side. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, In July 2021, President Lukashenko stated that, due to sanctions imposed by Western countries, he no longer intended to restrain illegal migration to the European Union. This was followed by attempts to illegally cross the border with Lithuania, Poland and Latvia by migrants from the Middle East, with total inactivity of the Belarusian border service. On 15 November at a session of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), foreign ministers of member states of the European Union (EU) reached a political agreement on applying the 5th parcel of sanctions against Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> Merkel discussed the migration issue on 10 and 11 November by phone with Putin, who said, among other things, that de-escalation of the migration crisis is only possible through direct talks between the EU and the Belarusian authorities.
