ENSREG experts to visit Belarus’ NPP on additional mission in May-June, 2021 – Gosatomnadzor

A mission of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) to Belarus is scheduled for May-June 2021, the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) reports on its website. </p> <p> </p> <p> ENSREG experts made a two-day visit to the Belarusian nuclear power plant (Astravyets District, Grodno Oblast) on February 9-10 as part of the peer review of the national plan of action on the results of NPP stress tests. The experts are expected to draft a peer review report based on the results of the visit and preceding events in March 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> An additional 1.5-week ENSREG mission to Belarus is preliminary planned for May-June 2021. The dates of the additional visit will be announced later, depending on the epidemiological situation. </p> <p> </p> <p> Upon completion of this mission, the final version of the ENSREG report on the peer review of the national plan will be published. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus has been cooperating with ENSREG to ensure safety of the NPP. During the previous peer reviews, ENSREG inspectors officially reported that they did not find any deviations from the IAEA safety standards. Belarus plans to execute the National Action Plan based on the stress test findings by 2025. The most recent safety verification was carried out by Minsk together with the European Commission represented by ENSREG in 2017-2018. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. According to decree No.447, the first power unit of the NPP will be put into commercial operation in 2021, the second power unit – in the first half of 2022. End </p> <p> </p>
