ENSREG experts admit progress in implementing safety recommendations for Belarusian nuclear power plant

Experts from the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) point out progress in implementing safety recommendations for the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP, Astravyets, Grodno Oblast), the European Commission said in a statement. </p> <p> </p> <p> The European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) has passed a preliminary report on a peer review of the national action plan based on results of stress tests of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The document appeared after the ENSREG experts’ visit to the plant on February 9-10. </p> <p> </p> <p> The report addresses the measures taken by the Belarusian side on seven priority issues related to the safety of the facility and the relevant recommendations from the 2018 ENSREG stress test report. </p> <p> </p> <p> With the adoption of this report, the first phase of the ongoing peer review of the Belarusian NPP comes to an end. The second phase of the peer review will cover all other recommendations from the stress tests and will involve another visit of ENSREG experts to the plant. It will take place as soon as the epidemic situation improves, the European Commission said. </p> <p> </p> <p> In February 2021, the European Parliament issued a resolution, suggesting the European Commission should consider demanding to suspend the Belarusian nuclear power plant until all safety concerns and all stress-test recommendations have been properly addressed. The EU parliament notes with concern that the plant is being implemented as a geopolitical project of Belarus and Russia and that its construction and future operation is a source of possible threat to the European Union and its Member States with regard to safety, health and the protection of the environment. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. According to presidential decree No.447 of November 30, 2020, the first power unit of the NPP will be put into commercial operation in 2021, the second power unit – in the first half of 2022.
