EEU countries free to take own decisions on labelling tobaccos, alcohol products

Member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) will independently introduce labels and special marks for tobacco and alcohol products, said Iya Malkina, Assistant to the Chairman of the EEC Board. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The Council also discussed the labelling of tobacco and alcohol products proposed by Kyrgyzstan. The parties agreed to introduce labelling independently under their national legislation without taking into account the provisions of the basic model of the EEU labelling system. The decision was made taking into account the fact that the turnover of tobacco and alcohol is controlled in the countries within the state excise policy,” the state news agency BelTA reports citing Malkina as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> The EEC Council also decided on common mechanisms of cryptographic protection for marking goods with identification labels. </p> <p> </p> <p> “This will allow, on the one hand, to avoid barriers to the movement of marked products in cross-border trade and, on the other hand, increase the level of protection of marked products against counterfeiting,” Malkina said.
