EEC, SCO Secretariat sign memorandum of understanding

Chairman of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Mikhail Myasnikovich and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Secretary General Vladimir Norov signed a memorandum of mutual understanding between the EEC and the SCO Secretariat in Dushanbe on 17 September during the summit of the SCO heads of state, said the EEC press service. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The document provides for economic cooperation with a focus on such areas as finance, trade policy and trade facilitation issues, transport, digitalization and information and communication technologies, sanitary, veterinary and phytosanitary quarantine measures, customs policy, energy, industrial and agro-industrial cooperation and others,” the report said. </p> <p> </p> <p> The trade turnover between the EEU and the SCO countries, which are not member states of the Eurasian Economic Union, increased consistently from $93.8 billion in 2016 to $158.8 billion in 2019. It decreased by $8.3bn in 2020, but already in January-June 2021 it was $86.6bn, up 23% year on year. </p> <p> </p> <p> The EEU is an international economic integration association established on the basis of the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space, which has been operating since 1 January 2015. The EEU ensures freedom of movement of goods, as well as services, capital and labour, and pursues coordinated, harmonised or unified policies in the sectors of the economy. </p> <p> </p> <p> The SCO comprises China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, Mongolia have observer status; Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey are dialogue partners. Belarus obtained an SCO observer status in July 2015.
