EBD forecast for Belarus’ GDP in 2021: 0.1% growth under baseline scenario, 1.4% decline under risk-driven scenario

Belarus’ gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021 will grow by 0.1% under the baseline scenario and decline by 1.4% under the risk scenario, the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) said in its analytical report “EDB Macroeconomic Outlook: Strong Recovery Growth in 2021”. </p> <p> </p> <p> The analytical report was officially presented on March 31. </p> <p> </p> <p> “In our baseline scenario, we expect economic activity to remain low this year and GDP growth to be minimal at 0.1%. GDP will remain below pre-crisis levels in 2021-2021, primarily due to weak investment activity and a weakening of consumer demand. The economy will be supported by economic growth in Belarus’ trading partners. The potential for sustainable economic growth in the long run, according to our calculations, will decline to 0.5-1% per year due to the pandemic consequences and social and political events,” said Anatoli Kharitonchik, Senior Analyst of the Centre for Country Analysis of the EDB Directorate for Analytical Work, during the presentation of the review. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the Belarusian authorities forecast GDP growth of 1.8% in 2021.
