BSIA concerned about outbreak of violence in Belarus

The Belarusian Scientific and Industrial Association (BSIA) has released a statement, voicing concern over the unprecedented outbreak of violence in Belarus as the authorities’ response to the public protests against the result of the presidential election of August 9. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Association demands that violence stops immediately, and urges the central authorities to begin dialogue with society. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Thousands of Belarusian families have suffered, families of the Association members among them. Each case of violence should be investigated, and the perpetrators should be brought to justice in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Belarus,” reads the statement. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Today, regardless of our political views, we all should be aware of what a split in our society can lead to, and take all measures to achieve social harmony by peaceful means. The monopolization of power and its irremovability leads to extremely unhealthy changes in society. We believe that public consensus through constitutional reform, which will ensure the revival of democratic institutions in Belarus, will be a solution to the problem,” the Association said. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Belarusian Scientific and Industrial Association stated its readiness to facilitate public dialogue by all available means, which is the only way to normalize the situation in Belarus.
