BelNPP to launch second unit by summer 2022 – premier
<p> MINSK, Dec 22 - PrimePress. The second unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP, Astravyets, Grodno Oblast) will be made operational by the summer of 2022. Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko made a statement to this effect during a visit to the BelNPP site, where they started loading fresh nuclear fuel into the reactor of the second unit, the Energy Ministry of Belarus said in a statement. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We are proceeding on schedule and intend to commission the second unit by next summer. Thus, the Belarusian nuclear power plant will reach the rated output and will generate about 40% of the country's total electricity,” Golovchenko said. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, on 22 December, the first nuclear assembly with fresh nuclear fuel was loaded into the reactor core of the second unit. All in all, the reactor core will get 163 fuel assemblies. Fuel in one fuel assembly will weigh 571kg. </p> <p> </p> <p> On 21 Dec, the Board of Belarus’ Emergencies Ministry ruled to grant the license to begin the physical launch of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. The first power unit of the NPP was put into commercial operation on 10 June 2021, the second power unit – due in H1 2022. End </p>
