Belarus to save $500m per year thanks to NPP – Energy Ministry

Belarus will save foreign exchange equivalent to $500 million per year after the commissioning of the NPP (Astravyets District, Grodno Oblast), Energy Minister of Belarus Viktor Karankevich said on November 7 during the visit of President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to the NPP, the presidential press office quotes him as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The NPP will generate around 18 billion kWh per year. This will make it possible to substitute nearly 4.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, saving more than $500 million. Greenhouse gas emissions will decrease by more than 7 million tonnes per year. The NPP’s lifespan is 60 years, possibly up to 100 years,” said Karankevich. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the minister, the NPP will create more than 2,500 jobs, employing around 60 Russian and Ukrainian specialists. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Belarusian NPP occupies an area of 100 hectares. As many as 130 buildings and facilities have been built there. Eighty-eight facilities will enter into operation with the first power unit, and 42 with the second one, said Karankevich. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The first power unit was launched on November 3, 2020. It is expected to be put into commercial operation in February 2021; the second unit – in May 2022. End </p> <p> </p>
