Belarus, Rosatom discuss construction of another NPP and nuclear research reactor – Likhachev

Russian state corporation Rosatom is discussing with the leadership of Belarus the construction of another nuclear power plant a research nuclear reactor in the country, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev said in an online address to Russian nuclear industry workers posted on the corporate website. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We are discussing with the leadership of Belarus the construction of another plant and a research reactor,” Likhachev said. </p> <p> </p> <p> He said that the first power unit of the Belarusian NPP built jointly with Russia began operation on November 3, 2020, and was connected to the national power grid of Belarus. “It is the first 3+ generation unit built on the European continent outside Russia,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said earlier during his visit to the NPP in Astavyets that Rosatom was invited to set up a subsidiary in Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The first power unit was launched on November 3, 2020. It is expected to be put into commercial operation in February 2021; the second unit – in May 2022. End </p> <p> </p>
