Belarus reports $931.1m foreign trade deficit in Jan-Apr 2021
<p> MINSK, Jun 1 - PrimePress. Belarus’ deficit in foreign trade in commodities and services amounted to $931.1 million in Jan-Apr 2021 compared with a $1.433 billion deficit in Jan-Apr 2020, says the National Statistics Committee of Belarus (Belstat). </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities were up 35.3% year on year in Jan-Apr 2021 to $11.411 billion, imports – up 25.1% to $12.342 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities to the CIS member states increased in Jan-Apr 2021 by 24.4% year on year to $6.639 billion; to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) – up 17.6% to $5.032 billion; to Russia – up 17.4% to $4.739 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports to countries outside the CIS increased by 54% on the year in Jan-Apr 2021 to $4.772 billion. Exports to the European Union (EU) grew threefold to $2.887 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from the CIS in Jan-Apr 2021 were up 40.6% y/y to $7.468 billion; from the EEU member states – up 44.4% to $6.811 billion; from Russia – up 44.4% to $6.747 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from countries outside the CIS decreased in Jan-Apr 2020 by 7% year on year to $4.874 billion; imports from the EU were down 5.3% to $2.032 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> The deficit in foreign trade in commodities with the CIS in Jan-Apr 2021 amounted to $829.3 million (+$25.1 million in Jan-Apr 2020). The deficit in trade with the EEU stood at $1.78 billion (minus $437.6m in Jan-Apr 2020), with Russia – (minus $2.008 billion ($634.4m). </p> <p> </p> <p> The deficit in foreign trade in commodities with countries outside the CIS totalled $101.8m in Jan-Apr 2021 to compare with a $1.458bn deficit in Jan-Apr 2020. The surplus in trade with the EU in Jan-Apr 2021stood at $854.9m against a $711.1m deficit in Jan-Apr 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> In January-April 2021, CIS countries accounted for 59.39% (in January-April 2020 - 58.18%) of Belarus' foreign trade turnover; non-CIS countries accounted for 40.61% (41.82%); EEU countries - 49.86% (49.15%); Russia - 48.36% (47.58%); the EU - 20.71% (19.57%). </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Belarus’ deficit in foreign trade in commodities in 2020 amounted to $3.578 billion.
