Belarus reports $1.388bn foreign trade deficit in Jan-Apr 2020

Belarus’ deficit of foreign trade in commodities amounted to $1.388 billion in January-April 2020 compared with a $1.948 billion deficit in January-April 2019, says the National Statistics Committee of Belarus (Belstat). </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities decreased in Jan-Apr 2020 by 19.1% year on year to $8. 485 billion; imports were down 20.6% to $9.873 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports to the CIS member states shrank in Jan-Apr 2020 by 6.2% year on year to $5.35 billion. Exports to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) were down 3.4% to $4.274 billion; to Russia – down 2.8% to $4.032 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities to outside the CIS decreased in Jan-Apr 2020 by 34.4% yoy to $3.136 billion. Exports to the European Union (EU) fell by 30.4% to $1.437 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from the CIS dropped in Jan-Apr 2020 by 29.5% yoy to $5.395 billion; from the EEU – down 32% to $4.816 billion; from Russia – down 32.4% to $4.755 billion </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from outside the CIS decreased in Jan-Apr 2020 by 6.2% yoy to $4.478 billion; from the EU – down 4.9% to $2.07 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Belstat, the deficit of foreign trade in commodities with the CIS totaled $45.6 million in Jan-Apr 2020 to compare with $1.954 billion deficit in Jan-Apr 2019; with the EEU –$542.8 million ($2.656 billion); Russia – $723.2 million ($2.886 billion). </p> <p> </p> <p> The deficit of foreign trade in commodities with countries outside the CIS stood at $1.342 billion in Jan-Apr 2020 to compare with a $5.4 million surplus in Jan-Apr 2019. The deficit of foreign trade in commodities with the EU in Jan-Apr 2020 amounted to $632.2 million against a deficit of $111.1 million in Jan-Apr 2019. </p> <p> </p> <p> In terms of Belarus’ foreign trade turnover in Jan-Apr 2020, the CIS accounted for 58.53% (58.32% in Jan-Apr 2019); countries outside the CIS – 41.47% (41.68%); the EEU – 49.51% (50.21%), Russia – 47.86% (48.79%), the EU – 19.1% (18.52%). </p> <p> As reported, in 2019, Belarus’ deficit of foreign trade in commodities amounted to $6.405 billion in 2019.
