Belarus reports $1.04m deficit in foreign trade in commodities in Jan-May 2021

Belarus’ deficit in foreign trade in commodities amounted to $1.04 billion in Jan-May 2021 compared with a $1.624 billion deficit in Jan-May 2020, says the National Statistics Committee of Belarus (Belstat). </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities were up 38.9% year on year in Jan-May 2021 to $14.543 billion, imports – up 28.9% to $15.583 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities to the CIS member states increased in Jan-May 2021 by 28.2% year on year to $8.4 billion; to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) – up 21.3% to $6.39 billion; to Russia – up 20.8% to $6 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports to countries outside the CIS increased by 56.8% on the year in Jan-May 2021 to $6.143 billion. Exports to the European Union (EU) grew 3.1 times to $3.685 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from the CIS in Jan-May 2021 were up 43% y/y to $9.422 billion; from the EEU member states – up 47.1% to $8.633 billion; from Russia – up 47% to $8.55 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from countries outside the CIS increased in Jan-May 2021 by 11.9% year on year to $6.161 billion; imports from the EU were up 0.02% to $2.584 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> The deficit in foreign trade in commodities with the CIS in Jan-May 2021 amounted to $1.022 billion (minus $38.3 million in Jan-May 2020). The deficit in trade with the EEU stood at $2.242 billion (minus $600.2m in Jan-May 2020), with Russia – (minus $2.541 billion ($839m). </p> <p> </p> <p> The deficit in foreign trade in commodities with countries outside the CIS totalled $17.8m in Jan-May 2021 to compare with a $1.886bn deficit in Jan-May 2020. The surplus in trade with the EU in Jan-May 2021 stood at $1.101bn against a $799.9m deficit in Jan-May 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> In January-May 2021, CIS countries accounted for 59.16% (in January-May 2020 - 58.24%) of Belarus' foreign trade turnover; non-CIS countries accounted for 40.84% (41.76%); EEU countries - 49.87% (49.37%); Russia - 48.33% (47.83%); the EU - 20.81% (19.35%). </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Belarus’ deficit in foreign trade in commodities in 2020 amounted to $3.578 billion.
