Belarus preps adequate response to possible sanctions by Western countries - Makey

Belarus has worked out an adequate political, economic and military response to the likely sanctions that may be imposed by Western countries, said Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makey in an TV interview on June 13. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We have developed adequate political, economic and military responses. And we will, of course, take these steps depending on the measures taken by our partners,” said Makey. </p> <p> </p> <p> In his words, this position was informed to representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Belarus during the June 8 meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. </p> <p> </p> <p> Makey says Western partners are trying to show that “Belarus poses a threat to regional and international security in order to justify any action against Minsk. </p> <p> </p> <p> In turn, the Belarusian side, according to the minister, is set up for an equal dialogue. “We should discuss real and possible problems that exist between Belarus and this or that country: the prospects of our relations, ways to solve the problems,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, after the August 2020 presidential elections in Belarus, a political crisis began in the country. The authorities responded to the protests of citizens who disagreed with the election results with harsh repression and persecution. Since October 2020, the EU has already introduced three packages of sanctions against the Belarusian authorities, and after the Ryanair incident in Minsk a fourth package is in the pipeline. European Union High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell says a fourth package of sanctions may be approved at the June 21 meeting of the Council of the Foreign Affairs Ministries of EU member states. </p> <p> </p> <p> In turn, Belarus said it would retaliate by applying political and economic measures. For instance, at the end of April 2021, the Belarusian government imposed retaliatory sanctions and banned the import of Skoda Auto, Liqui Moly and Beiersdorf products into Belarus for six months. The aforementioned brands previously said they would refuse to sponsor the ice hockey world championship if Minsk played host to the event. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ mutual trade with the EU in 2020 totalled $11.9 billion (exports - $5.4 billion, imports - $6.5 billion). Trade with the EU in the first quarter of 2021 accounted for 21% of Belarus' total foreign trade turnover. End </p>
