MINSK, Oct 20 - PrimePress. The Belarusian nuclear power plant (Astravyets District, Grodno Oblast) will employ nearly 2,500 people, says Lilia Dulinets, deputy head of the Nuclear Energy Department at the Ministry of Energy of Belarus.
More than two thousand people are working at the Belarusian NPP now. After the full staffing, the number of personnel according to the project documentation will be over 2,500,” Dulinets told Belneftekhim Vestnik magazine.
The NPP personnel are being trained in line with IAEA recommendations based on world NPP operation practices.
The most elaborate training is provided to the operating personnel engaged directly in the management of the reactors, turbines and other sophisticated equipment.
“Upon graduation from the university with degrees in nuclear energy, young specialists undergo training at the NPP training center under individual programs. This includes theory and practice with a full-scale simulator, which is fully consistent with a modular controlling unit, and internship at operating power units. The operating personnel must maintain their qualification, as prescribed by national legislation,” said Dulinets.
The NPP currently employs in key positions foreign experts experienced in operating nuclear power plants in Russia and Ukraine.
As previously reported, Russia has trained 600 specialists to operate the NPP.
The nuclear power plant is expected to start generating energy in the fourth quarter of 2020. Its 1st power unit is to be put into commercial operation in the first quarter of 2021, the 2nd unit – in 2022.
Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. The startup of the first power unit was postponed from 2018 to 2019 and then to the first quarter of 2021.
