Belarus needs to expand presence of China’s leading companies and banks - Lukashenko

It is important for Belarus to expand the business and investment presence of leading Chinese companies and banks in the country, Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko said in an address to the VI All-Belarusian People's Congress on 11 February. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Our development benchmarks largely coincide, which is the basis for further strengthening of ties between Belarus and China. Now China provides real assistance to our country in the construction of housing at their expense, important social infrastructure facilities. At the current stage it is important to expand business and investment presence of leading companies and banks in Belarus, first of all in the China-Belarus Industrial Park Great Stone,” said Lukashenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> In his words, Belarus should more actively explore the Chinese market. “Hundreds of Belarusian agricultural enterprises have already been accredited to supply goods to China… On average this will add up to $700 million to our export to the PRC and up to $1 billion to our export [revenues],” said Lukashenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> He noted that it was the strategic cooperation with China that became one of the reasons for the West's attack on Belarus in late 2020. I answered them: "When the European Union and the USA attacked us and the economy of Belarus five-six years ago with large-scale sanctions, China unreservedly supported us, at that time it opened its door for us and we entered it. So, should we now close to China the only way to Europe, this doorway through Belarus? We can't do it, because we are grateful people and we remember what we had then.
