Belarus’ inflation shows yoy acceleration due to higher prices of imported foodstuffs – MART

Belarus’ inflation has exceeded the 2020 inflation largely due to the growth in prices which are most affected by the depreciation of the Belarusian ruble and the rise in prices of imported foodstuffs, says a commentary on the price situation on the consumer market, posted on the website of the Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade of Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> MART experts say that curbing the growth of administered prices (tariffs) and prices of socially important goods helped to keep them below the inflation level, with their growth in 2020 being 6.7% and 6% respectively. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The acceleration of annual inflation by 0.8 p.p. in December was mainly due to the rise in prices of imported vegetables (due to the seasonal substitution of domestic vegetables with imported ones, which strengthened the transfer of the exchange rate factor). In addition, there was an increase in prices of goods which are not produced in Belarus or are produced in insufficient quantities (vegetable oil, cereals, fish),” reads the report. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to MART, the growth of automobile fuel prices slowed down from 6.8% in November to 3.7% in December, butter - from 4.5% to 1.4%, wheat flour - from 1.6% to 1.1%, clothing - from 4.2% to 3.6%. Salt fell in price by 9.7% over the year. </p> <p> </p> <p> In December 2020, prices of goods in the fruit and vegetable segment rose by 28.2% and fruit by 5.5%. Meat and meat products went up in the group of food products by 0.5%, bread and bakery products by 0.6%, confectionery by 1%, oils and fats by 2.6%, chicken eggs by 6.4%. </p> <p> </p> <p> “In the group of non-food products, there are multidirectional dynamics of free prices: on the one hand, due to Xmas actions and sales by retailers, prices for some goods go down (clothes and shoes fell in price by 0.5% and 1.3%), on the other hand, prices for some imported goods (TV sets and cars) go up”, says the MART commentary.
