Belarus govt suggests setting up national operator for nuclear waste disposal

The government of Belarus has proposed to set up a special department for radioactive waste management and a designated organization that will act as a national operator to collect, recycle, store and dispose of such waste. </p> <p> </p> <p> This follows fr om a statement released by President Lukashenko’s press service following the meeting of President Alexander Lukashenko with the leadership of the government on 22 July. </p> <p> </p> <p> Lukashenko emphasized that nuclear waste is not only a very dangerous, but also very valuable raw material. “This is an extremely valuable product. And the following question arises today: what will we do with this valuable, but very dangerous product that is new to our country? This is a serious issue and a product of great value,” the head of state said. “As international practice shows, the management of such waste requires the creation of a unified system run by the state. In fact, this is a new branch of the economy,” said Lukashenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> The government has also proposed to introduce the positions of official representatives of the ministries of industry, agriculture and food at the embassy in China, as well as to optimize the service personnel numbers at all diplomatic missions. “The government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were tasked to carry out optimization. Increasing our presence on our main markets (be it Russia, China, India, the markets we are focusing on now and the countries wh ere we are welcome) and optimizing workforce at the embassies that are making little headway today due to certain circumstances,” said Lukashenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> To fully digitalize accounting, control and payment of taxes and to improve tax administration, it was proposed to expand the staff of the Tax and Duties Ministry. </p> <p> </p> <p> “All proposals imply additional public spending. In this regard, we need rock-solid guarantees that these expenditures are relevant, unavoidable, efficient and generate more profits than losses. We must be sure that these proposals will help tackle the most important tasks - from nuclear safety to export growth,” said Lukashenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. The first power unit of the NPP was officially certified for industrial operation on June 10, 2021, the launch of the second power unit is due in H1 2022. End </p>
