Belarus eager to use part of Russian nuke loan to buy S-400 air defence systems from Moscow - Lukashenko

Belarus is interested in purchasing the Russian-made S-400 medium-to-long-range air defence missile systems at the expense of the Russian state credit provided by Moscow for the nuclear power plant construction project in Astravyets (Grodno Oblast), Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Monday. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We have saved substantial funds on the nuclear power plant," he said. "I am ready to spend this part and this involves from $300 million to $500 million, at internal Russian prices, on a considerable amount of military and technical equipment, including S-400s, this is what we are talking about," the Belarusian president said. </p> <p> </p> <p> “This issue was raised before the president of Russia so that the S-400s can be delivered to the Republic of Belarus at a reasonable price on a loan because we do not have such money," Lukashenko said at a meeting with journalists and public figures. </p> <p> </p> <p> First Deputy Finance Minister of Belarus Dmitri Kiyko said on 4 Mar 2021 that Belarus was considering the possibility of using the remainder of the Russian state loan allocated for the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP, Astravyets, Grodno Oblast) for other investment projects, said. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The possibility of using the balance of the state export credit of the Russian Federation for the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant to implement other investment projects of interest to both the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation is being considered in the medium term,” Kiyko said. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported by Russian media, the Belarusian president intended to ask Russian President Vladimir Putin for a $3-3.5 billion loan from the unused part of the $10 billion Russian state loan for the BelNPP construction at the talks on February 22, 2021.
