Belarus’ crude oil import down 11.12% in 2020 to 16m tonnes

Belarus reduced the import of crude oil in January-December 2020 by 11.12% year on year to 16 million tonnes, the National Statistics Committee of Belarus (Belstat) reports. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus imported 15.2 million tonnes of oil from CIS member states (the value has not been specified yet), and 0.8 million tonnes of oil worth $189.482 million from countries outside the CIS. In 2019, Belarus bought 18 million tonnes of oil worth $6.580 billion from the CIS, while no oil was supplied from outside the CIS. </p> <p> </p> <p> In 2020, Belarus reduced oil imports in value terms by 40.8% to $3.890 billion from 2019. The import from the Russian Federation decreased in 2020 by 47.6% to $3.441 billion year on year. The import from Azerbaijan totalled $244.095 million; Lithuania – $72.032 million; Norway – $52.568 million; Saudi Arabia – $13.146 million; the United States – $51.735 million; Kazakhstan – $375,900. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Belarus diversified oil supplies to its refineries (Naftan, Novopolotsk, Vitebsk Oblast, and Mozyr Refinery, Gomel Oblast) in 2020 amid periodic price disagreements with Russia. While continuing to buy Russian crude oil delivered through the Druzhba pipeline and by rail, Belarus also sought alternative routes to transport crude by sea via the ports of Klaipeda (Lithuania) and Odessa (Ukraine).
