Belarus banks’ net foreign assets up 34.4% to minus $3.473bn in Jan-Mar 2021

Net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions amounted to minus U.S. $3.473 billion as of Apr 1, 2021, up 34.4% year to date, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in a statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> Net foreign assets of commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions increased by 11.9% in Jan-Mar 2021 to $1.688 billion, while foreign liabilities of banks grew by 26.1% to $5.161 billion as of Apr 1, 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> As of Apr 1, 2021 deposits accounted for $998.9 million of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ net foreign assets (up 40.6% year to date), credits – $122m (down 60.6%), foreign exchange – $458.2m (up 48.7%), securities (except shares) – $48.2m (down 54.1%), other assets – $60.7m (down 12%). </p> <p> </p> <p> Credits accounted for $4.458bn of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ external liabilities as of Apr 1, 2021 (down 0.4% year to date), deposits – $682.5m (up 27.1%), securities (except shares) – $0.00 compared with $0.00 as of Jan 1, 2021, other liabilities - $20.8m (up 27%). </p> <p> </p> <p> In 2020, net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions reduced by 14.8% to minus $3.637 billion as of January 1, 2021.
