Belarus banks’ net foreign assets up 2.6% to minus $3.733bn in Jan-Apr 2021

Net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions amounted to minus U.S. $3.733 billion as of May 1, 2021, up 2.6% year to date, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in a statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> Net foreign assets of commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions increased by 2.8% in Jan-Apr 2021 to $1.557 billion, while foreign liabilities of banks grew by 5.7% to $5.446 billion as of May 1, 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> As of May 1, 2021 deposits accounted for $914.56 million of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ net foreign assets (up 6% year to date), credits – $58.52m (down 16.4%), foreign exchange – $458.26m (down 4.6%), securities (except shares) – $48.25m (up 0.5%), other assets – $77.59m (up 46.4%). </p> <p> </p> <p> Credits accounted for $4.707bn of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ external liabilities as of May 1, 2021 (up 3.9% year to date), deposits – $711.41m (up 21.7%), securities (except shares) – $0.00 compared with $0.00 as of Jan 1, 2021, other liabilities - $27.74m (down 21%). </p> <p> </p> <p> In 2020, net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions reduced by 14.8% to minus $3.637 billion as of January 1, 2021.
