Belarus banks’ net foreign assets up 13.5% to minus $4.126bn in Jan-May 2021

Net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions amounted to minus U.S. $4.126 billion as of June 1, 2021, up 13.5% year to date, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in a statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> Net foreign assets of commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions decreased by 11.3% in Jan-May 2021 to $1.344 billion, while foreign liabilities of banks grew by 6.2% to $5.47 billion as of June 1, 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> As of June 1, 2021 deposits accounted for $660 million of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ net foreign assets (down 23.5% year to date), credits – $67.55m (down 3.5%), foreign exchange – $520.1m (up 8.2%), securities (except shares) – $48.29m (up 0.6%), other assets – $48.1m (down 9.2%). </p> <p> </p> <p> Credits accounted for $4.726bn of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ external liabilities as of June 1, 2021 (up 4.3% year to date), deposits – $662.1m (up 13.3%), securities (except shares) – $0.00 compared with $0.00 as of Jan 1, 2021, other liabilities - $81.45m (up 2.32 times). </p> <p> </p> <p> In 2020, net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions reduced by 14.8% to minus $3.637 billion as of January 1, 2021.
