Belarus banks’ net foreign assets up 0.1% to minus $3.635bn in Jan-Feb 2021

Net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions amounted to minus U.S. $3.635 billion as of March 1, 2021, up 0.1% year to date, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in a statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> Net foreign assets of commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions increased by 8.2% in Jan-Feb 2021 to $1.639 billion, while foreign liabilities of banks grew by 2.4% to $5.273 billion as of Mar 1, 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> As of Mar 1, 2021 deposits accounted for $1.044 billion of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ net foreign assets (up 7.4% year to date), credits – $96.2m (up 37.5%), foreign exchange – $410m (down 14.7%), securities (except shares) – $48m (down 0.06%), other assets – $44.6m (down 15.9%). </p> <p> </p> <p> Credits accounted for $4.513bn of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ external liabilities as of Mar 1, 2021 (down 0.4% year to date), deposits – $732.1m (down 25.2%), securities (except shares) – $0.00 compared with $0.00 as of Jan 1, 2021, other liabilities - $28.3m (down 19.5%). </p> <p> </p> <p> In 2020, net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions reduced by 14.8% to minus $3.637 billion as of January 1, 2021.
