Belarus awaits IAEA mission on physical protection of nuclear material in Jun-Jul 2021 – Gosatomnadzor

A mission of the International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) plans a visit to Belarus in June-July 2021, says Alexander Dokuchayev, deputy head of the Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus (Gosatomnadzor). </p> <p> The preparatory phase will begin as soon as next week. A post-mission of the Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) on an Emergency Preparedness Review (EPREV)is expected in the fourth quarter of 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Dokuchayev, the post-missions are related to the assessment of the extent to which Belarus has implemented the proposals and recommendations formulated by the main missions. “As a rule, we execute everything on time without backlogs. The country’s efforts are estimated quite highly,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. According to decree No.447, the first power unit of the NPP will be put into commercial operation in 2021, the second power unit – in the first half of 2022. End </p> <p> </p>
