Belarus’ annual inflation accelerates to 9.4% in May 2021, core inflation – 9.3%

Annual inflation in Belarus accelerated to 9.4% in May 2021, while core inflation sped up to 9.3%, reads the monthly inflation review released by the National Bank of Belarus (NBB). </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, inflation in Belarus was 0.6% in May 2021, Jan-May – 5.2%. </p> <p> </p> <p> Consumer prices rose in May 2021 by 9.4% year on year (8.6% yoy in Apr 2021; 8.5% y/y in Mar 2021). </p> <p> </p> <p> Core inflation increased to 9.3% in May 2021; 8.5% in Apr 2021; 8.2% yoy in Mar 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> The increase in administered prices and tariffs stood at 9.4% in May 2021; 9% yoy in Apr; 8.7% yoy in Mar 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> Seasonal prices (fruit and vegetables) increased by 11.7% year on year in May 2021 to compare with 9.5% yoy in Apr 2021; 12.8% yoy in Mar 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> The year-on-year aggregate trend inflation rate was at 7.8% yoy in May 2021; 7.1% yoy in Apr 2021; 6.7% yoy in Mar 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> In May 2021, the maximum and minimum growth rates of free prices and tariffs in annual terms were, in particular, minus 2.7% as regards hotel services; minus 0.5% - wheat flour; +3.5% - dairy products; +2.5% - lease payment for one-bedroom flat;+4.2% - pasta; +15.6% - cars; +17.7% - mustard; +19.3% - eggs; +20.7% - oil and fats; +28.8% - mayonnaise. </p> <p> </p> <p> The maximum and minimum annual growth rates of regulated prices and tariffs in May 2021 were, in particular, +1.3% for higher education services; +4.6% for alcoholic beverages; +10.7% for utilities; +13.2% for regulated passenger transport services; +16.7% for car insurance services; and +23.2% for pharmaceuticals.
