Belarus’ annual inflation accelerates to 8.6% in Apr 2021, core inflation – 8.4%

Annual inflation in Belarus accelerated to 8.6% in Apr 2021, reads the monthly inflation review released by the National Bank of Belarus (NBB). </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, inflation in Belarus was 0.7% in Apr 2020, Jan-Apr – 4.6%. </p> <p> </p> <p> Consumer prices rose in Apr 2021 by 8.6% year on year (8.5% yoy in Mar 2021; 8.7% y/y in Feb 2021). </p> <p> </p> <p> Core inflation increased to 8.4% in Apr 2020; 8.2% in Mar 2021; 8.3% yoy in Feb 2021; 7.5% y/y in Jan 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> The increase in administered prices and tariffs accelerated to 10.2% in Apr 2021; 8.7% yoy in Mar; 8.5% yoy in Feb 2021; 7.3% y/y in Jan 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> Seasonal prices (fruit and vegetables) increased by 9.5% year on year in Apr 2021 to compare with 12.8% yoy in Mar 2021; 15.9% yoy in Feb 2021, and 12.5% yoy in Jan 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> The year-on-year aggregate trend inflation rate was at 7.1% yoy in Apr 2021; 6.7% yoy in Mar 2021; 5.9% yoy in Jan 2021 and 6.5% in Feb 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Apr 2021, the maximum and minimum growth rates of free prices and tariffs in annual terms were, in particular, minus 3% as regards hotel services; minus 0.8% - wheat flour; +2.2% - pasta goods; +2.5% - lease payment for one-bedroom flat; +2.9% - coffee; +17.2% - eggs; +17.5% - mustard; +18.2% - tourist services; +18.3% - oil and fats; +21.9% - mayonnaise. </p> <p> </p> <p> The maximum and minimum annual growth rates of regulated prices and tariffs in Apr 2021 were, in particular, +1.3% for higher education services; +4% for alcoholic beverages; +10.7% for housing services; +11.3% for car maintenance services; +13.1% for regulated passenger transport services; +16.7% for passenger car insurance services; +22.8% for pharmaceuticals.
